1 billion people – ⅓ of urban populations – live in slums.

By 2030, slum populations are expected to hit 2 billion, and cities are  struggling to provide basic sanitation services for all residents – including the containment, collection, and conversion of waste.

For the health and prosperity of urban citizens, cities need a sustainable waste management solution that safely captures, treats, and converts waste into valuable end-products. Sanergy builds healthy, prosperous communities by providing sustainable non-sewered sanitation solutions in Africa’s urban informal settlements.

Our unique business model allows for investment in people and operations to create compounding value. We focus on the entire sanitation value chain; we build, collect, and convert. By deploying multiple distribution service models to reach people 24/7, we can reach 100% coverage in communities. In cities where we work, we are empowering communities  and stimulating growth within urban informal settlements in the process.

In 2009 at MIT, David Auerbach, Lindsay Stradley, and Ani Vallabhaneni were tasked with developing a solution to a poverty challenge facing 1 billion people or more around the world. They developed a full value chain approach to addressing the sanitation crisis, offering a sustainable solution for urban slums. With that project, Sanergy was born. After graduating from MIT in 2011, David, Lindsay, and Ani moved to Nairobi to launch their business. On November 19, 2011 – World Toilet Day – Sanergy opened the first Fresh Life Toilet in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum. Sanergy is comprised of a dedicated team with diverse backgrounds, but one shared vision for urban slums. Today, we now have over 250 employees, 60% of whom live in the communities we serve. Our teammates come from three continents and nine countries.
