Toilets are a big deal – celebrating #WorldToiletDay 2015!

World Toilet Day is always a big deal for us here at Sanergy. It is a day we celebrate and advocate for access to something that few want to talk about – the sustained access to a clean toilet.

On this day, we also reminisce opening our very first Fresh Life Toilet in 2011. We’ve come a long way in the last four years, and we now have 764 FLTs serving nearly 32,000 residents every day with hygienic sanitation.

Women from Mukuru competed for the title of Miss Fresh Life 2015 at our World Toilet Day celebrations.

Last Thursday, November 19, we joined our community members to celebrate World Toilet Day and to reflect on our impact and learnings over the last four years. In our corner of Nairobi, our Fresh Life Operators and community residents joined the Sanergy team at Vision Football grounds in Mukuru Kwa Njenga. There were lots of fun activities and prizes to be won. Twenty-one-year-old Whitney Audrey from Mukuru Kwa Njenga was crowned Miss Fresh Life 2015. She is a college student at Zetech University and studies hospitality. In her acceptance speech, she urged the residents to join hands in cleaning up the community for future generations.

The youth put up an exciting show of football matches as they battled it out on the pitch. Kayaba FC took home the top prize in the competition. The football teams pledged to use their talent to promote hygiene practices in the community.

The day was also an opportunity to remind our community of important hygiene practices such as hand washing, proper toilet use to avoid fecal contamination, and water treatment as emphasized in our WASH program.
